I would like to welcome you to the first blog post brought to you by Free-Php.net. We will be posting regularly about various topics related to php scripting. We will post about free scripts that we have tried out ourselves as well as inform you of any helpful tutorials, resources, web hosts, and more that deal with php. If you find any of the information we provide useful, please use the “ShareThis” link at the top of each post.
Now that the introductions are in order, I want to let you know about a very nice blogging tool called WordPress. What is a blog, you might ask? Well, it is the software that allows me to publish these articles so you may read them on this web site. Blogs are generally personal in nature and center around a particular topic such as mine (free php scripts, etc). Now, that you know what a blog is, I will explain a few of the features in WordPress.
Key Features
# Full standards compliance
# Full theme system
# Cross-blogging communication tools (Trackback and Pingback)
# Comment system
# Spam protection
# Easy installation and upgrades
# Hundreds of plugins
First off, the theme system is quite easy to deal with if you are fairly comfortable with php and css. I was able to adapt the design from Free-Php.net quite easily with no real struggles. Installing WordPress is also very easy. All you have to do is download, upload, create a database in mySQL and modify a config file, then run the install program and you are literally done. The rest of the setup is just customizing your site to make it look the way you want.
Requirements
# PHP version 4.2 or greater
# MySQL version 4.0 or greater
If you are looking to get into the blogging craze and you want all of the flexibility that you will ever need with an amazing template system and easy to setup and administer then I really recommend Wordpress. It is absolutely free to use, no catches, no features disabled, it is all there for you to use for no cost.
You will need your own web site / hosting in order to install the WordPress software for yourself. However, if you do not have your own hosting, you can start your own free WordPress blog at WordPress.com. I hope you have enjoyed my first article, please look forward to plenty more.
